When you are in a dither

When you are in a dither

hopelessness

As I write this, I have lost my purse and I am trying mightily not to spiral into panic. I just came from a wonderful yoga class, was preparing to go to creativity class and then have a massage. Instead I have come home to monitor credit card and bank account activity and hope for a phone call from the YMCA saying they have found my purse.

Luckily, my fantastic yoga teacher Tanory spoke in class about the idea of the second arrow. Tara Brach explains it thus in her post “Learning to Respond, Not React:”

“I often use the metaphor of the second arrow because I find it just so helpful. The Buddha told a parable and the teaching was:

“If you get struck by an arrow, do you then shoot another arrow into yourself?”

A piece by Susan Bernstein in the Huffington Post succinctly explains the concept of the second arrow:

“… the Buddhists say that any time we suffer misfortune, two arrows fly our way. The first arrow is the actual bad event, which can, indeed, cause pain. The second arrow is the suffering. That’s actually optional. The second arrow represents our reaction to the bad event. It’s the manner in which we chose to respond emotionally.”

Bernstein offers four steps to avoid shooting the second arrow. Read the full article here.

So, here I sit, breathing, acknowledging my suffering and choosing not to invite the second arrow into my life.

Where do you have a choice to sit with your unhappiness or discomfort and choose not to allow the second arrow to shape your day or your life?

Update: the YMCA had my purse! It was covered by someone’s coat…
